Lasik Vision Correction
If you are tired of wearing glasses or contacts to improve your vision, Lasik vision correction is a simple surgical procedure that gives you another option. With Lasik vision correction surgery, the ophthalmologist corrects your vision by reshaping the cornea of your eye with a laser. The type of procedure you receive depends on whether you are near-sighted or far-sighted. For far-sightedness, the eye doctor flattens the steep angle of your cornea, while your cornea angle will be made steeper if you are near-sighted.
Finding the Right Ophthalmologist for Lasik Vision Correction
Your regular optometrist may refer you for Lasik vision correction if he or she thinks you would be a good candidate for it. Typically, Lasik is not recommended for people with only slight vision problems. If you are considering the procedure yourself, ask your optometrist for a recommendation or talk to friends who have had the surgery. If that still doesn’t yield any results, try an Internet search or speak to a representative at your health insurance company.
Your Pre-Exam Procedure
Prior to setting up an appointment for Lasik eye surgery, you will need to make an appointment with the ophthalmologist who is scheduled to perform the surgery. He or she will check the health of your eyes, determine your level of vision loss and correction required and how much corneal tissue will need to be removed using a laser technique. If the doctor determines that you would not make a good candidate for Lasik surgery, he or she may have another procedure in mind.
Day of the Surgery
The surgery can be completed in as little as five minutes by a laser which reshapes your cornea. It is an outpatient procedure, and you will leave with eye shields on to protect your eyes from light for the first few days.
